The Japanese electronics company Sony announced on Friday that the batteries inside their latest Vaio laptops contain a defect that could cause the computers to overheat and “burn.”
“It has come to our attention that some of the internal, non-removable battery packs provided to us by a third party supplier and included in VAIO Fit 11A released in February 2014 have the potential to overheat resulting in partial burns to the housing of the PC,” read a press released published on Sony’s website on Friday.
The company went on to advise customers who had purchased the at-risk model to “immediately discontinue use, shut down and unplug the PC.”
Sony is reportedly in the process of identifying compromised computers and putting together a plan to reimburse or repair customers’ laptops at no extra charge.
