Prosecutors announced Wednesday that a 26-year-old physicist was plotting to fly drones into government buildings in Washington. Rezwan Ferdaus of Ashland, Mass., was under the impression that he was working with al Qaeda when he hatched a plan to stuff explosives in a remote-controlled aircraft and fly them into both the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol.
The plan was detailed on two thumb drives given to agents. He’s charged with attempt to support and provide materials to a terrorist organization. Ferdaus allegedly programmed cellphones to work as a switch for an IED. Undercover federal agents had been talking to Ferdaus for the past year, and as late as Wednesday morning he believed he was getting C-4 explosives, AK-47 machine guns, and grenades.
Instead, it was the FBI that showed up at his door. Ferdaus is a U.S. citizen but planned a “jihad” against the U.S. in early 2010.
