Who Is Trying To Patent Marijuana? Is this good or bad news?

The secret is out: marijuana is medicine. And not to the surprise of the pharmaceutical industry, who is slowly but surely gaining exclusive rights to the medical properties of this age-old plant.

But wait. How can a company, other than Monsanto, patent a plant? That’s not a serious question, but it brings up a serious point. Patents on marijuana have yet to cover genetic modifications of the plant itself, but rather involve the cannabinoids found in marijuana that are responsible for its medical effects.

Phytocannabinoids in the treatment of cancer (Patent No. US20130059018)

The most recent patent filing on cannabinoids comes from none other than GW Pharmaceuticals – the UK-based company that manufactures Sativex (1). Sativex is an oral spray that contains cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant itself, specifically THC and CBD. Although Sativex is not yet available in the U.S., it has already gained approval in Canada, the UK and eight other European countries.

GW Pharma has been quick to recognize the market potential of cannabis and their most recent patent application makes this more than clear. Just from the title of the patent, one gets a good sense of what GW Pharma has been trying to claim as their own. “Phytocannabinoids” simply means cannabinoids derived from plants, referring to the cannabis plant in this case.

Unsurprisingly, it appears as though GW Pharma encountered difficulties in trying to claim such a broad “invention”. In fact, the updated version of their patent application shows that more than half of their original patent claims were retracted, and for good reason too. Looking back in time, GW Pharma made claims to just the use of isolated cannabinoids in the treatment of cancer, which is no more of an invention than it is a theft from individuals who first proclaimed marijuana’s cancer-fighting abilities decades ago.

On the other hand, GW Pharma’s remaining claims might just pass through the Patent Office without further questioning. GW Pharma seems to be familiar with the pharmaceutical industry’s shrewd patent strategies, which involves modifying pre-existing compounds that have already been proven to work.

In this case, all GW Pharma had to do was claim that they invented a cannabis-based botanical drug substance for treating cancer – botanical drug substance meaning any form of marijuana prepared by methods as simple as aqueous or ethanolic extraction. There you have it. GW Pharma invented neither cannabis nor a method of extraction, but still consider themselves to be inventors of “phytocannabinoids in the treatment of cancer”.

Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants (Patent No. US6630507)

Perhaps the most infamous marijuana-related patent belongs to the U.S. federal government themselves. Indeed, while federal agents have been keeping busy trying to defend their stance on pot prohibition, they also made sure to file patents on the medical components of the very same Schedule I drug. The funny thing is, this particular patent dates all the way back to 1998 when Bill “didn’t inhale” Clinton was still president.

Although federal patent writers made sure to include a long list of synthetic cannabinoids within their claims, carefully tucked away is none other than cannabidiol, also known as CBD.

Australia’s CSIRO Creates GMO FrankenFood that may silence human genes, leading to disastrous health consequences; (Video)

Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) has developed a type of genetically modified (GM) wheat that may silence human genes, leading to disastrous health consequences.

Last year, University of Canterbury Professor Jack Heinemann released results from genetic research he conducted on the wheat, which showed with “no doubt” that molecules created in the wheat, which are intended to silence wheat genes to change its carbohydrate content, may match human genes and potentially silence them.

University Professor Judy Carman agreed with Heinemann’s analysis, stating inDigital Journal:1

“If this silences the same gene in us that it silences in the wheat — well, children who are born with this enzyme not working tend to die by the age of about five.”

Over 770 Pages of Potential Genetic Matches

Heinemann reported that his research revealed over 770 pages of potential matches between two GM genes in the wheat and the human genome. Over a dozen matches were “extensive and identical and sufficient to cause silencing in experimental systems,” he said.

Experts warned that eating the wheat could lead to significant changes in the way glucose and carbohydrates are stored in the human body, which could be potentially deadly for children and lead to serious illness in adults.

Since this adverse effect is extremely plausible, long-term studies are needed before the wheat is released into the environment and the human food chain – but a new review states that the risks are still not being adequately assessed.

Australia; News Ltd Website – http://www.goldcoast.com.au Censored with bias and / or by the LNP Government?

The News Ltd website  – http://www.goldcoast.com.au did not reveal the whole truth about “GOLD Coast MP Jann Stuckey has lost her ninth staff member in nine months amid allegations of a toxic environment in her office.”

Allegedly there were another 18 staffers that had issues with Jann Stuckey that did not consent to have their names published.

Is that the reason, for News Ltd not to report this? Or is the bias that News Ltd already has for the new conservative Queensland dictatorial government come into play and therefore partly censored the story?

Whatever it is, it’s just another example censorship, in which the media feeds the viewers and readers just what they want us to read and know about – and NOT all the facts!

Japan’s first ‘cuddle cafe’ lets you sleep with a stranger for Y6,000 an hour

Japan’s first 'cuddle cafe' lets you sleep with a stranger for Y6,000 an hour

TOKYO —

Sometimes, after a long, stressful day, there’s nothing more comforting than crawling into bed with your significant other and falling asleep in their arms.

But what if you don’t have anyone to cuddle with in the first place? If you’re in Japan, you might think to go to a soapland or some other kind of brothel, but then you’d have to deal with all that sex when you really just want to close your eyes and rest in the warmth of another’s body.

But wait! Before you resign yourself to another lonely night of shedding tears on your Rei Ayanami dakimakura, why not stop by Soineya, Japan’s first “co-sleeping specialty shop,” where customers can pay to sleep in the arms of a beautiful girl—with no strings attached.

Soineya (literally, “sleep together shop”) opened its doors on Sept 25 in none other than Akihabara, Tokyo’s electronics district, hub of otaku culture and birthplace of other eccentric establishments like maid cafés. Soineya defines itself as a “co-sleeping specialty shop,” which we’re going to denominate “cuddle cafe” because it has a better ring to it.

According to the homepage, Soineya hopes to offer patrons “the simple and ultimate comfort of sleeping together with someone.”

Of course, ultimate comfort comes at a price. Let’s take a look at the Soineya “service menu”:

Admission fee: 3,000 yen

Standard Course

20 min – 3,000 yen
40 min – 5,000 yen (only 3,000 yen for first time visitors)
60 min – 6,000 yen
2 hrs – 11,000 yen
3 hrs – 16,000 yen
4 hrs – 20,000 yen
5 hrs – 25,000 yen
6 hrs – 30,000 yen
10 hrs – 50,000 yen

“Shimei-ryo“ (fee to pick the girl you want to sleep with) – 1,000 yen + 500 yen per hour

Optional Course

Customer sleeps in girl’s arm (3 min) – 1,000 yen
Girl pats customer on the back (3 min) – 1,000 yen
Customer pets girl on the head (3 min) – 1,000 yen
Customer and girl stare at each other (1 min) – 1,000 yen
Girl changes clothes (1 time) – 1,000 yen
Girl gives customer foot massage (3 min) – 1,000 yen
Customer gives girl foot massage (3 min) – 2,000 yen
Customer sleeps with head on girl’s lap (3 min) – 1,000 yen
Girl sleeps with head on customer’s lap (3 min) – 2,000 yen

So basically, you’re paying about 6,000 yen an hour to lie in bed with a complete stranger. The website doesn’t specify what customers are and are not permitted to do during the standard course, but it’s probably safe to assume your options are limited to “close your eyes and be quiet.”

Furthermore, Soineya is currently recruiting girls for part-time in-store and “delivery” work. Here’s the job description.

■ Job: Sleeping
■ Location: Akihabara (3 min walk from station)
■ Qualifications: High school age to 30s
■ Compensation: 3,500 yen/hour
■ Hours: Weekdays 15:00-22:00, Weekend/holidays 12:00-22:00

Twitter helps reunite lost dog that took the train to Dublin

A pet owner who lost her dog Patch when he jumped aboard a train, has been reunited with her beloved pooch after spotting him on Twitter

Deirdre Anglin was left heartbroken when her Jack Russell Patch disappeared from her home on Tuesday night and all her attempts to find him failed.

But when she logged on to her Twitter account she saw a tweet about a “lost dog” with a photo attached and discovered it was her pet Patch, the Daily Mail reported.

The adventurous Jack Russell had jumped on a commuter train from rural Kilcock, County Kildare, to Dublin 30 kilometres away.

A Jack Russell terrierIrish Rail sent a “Lost dog!” tweet with a photo attachment after Patch arrived in Dublin station on Wednesday morning without an owner.

The message was retweeted 500 times in just 32 minutes until it was spotted by Anglin who quickly replied to Irish Rail: “That’s my dog!”

Staff aboard the train discovered Patch shortly after leaving Kilcock and nicknamed him Checker as he followed them around while they inspected tickets and also searched for his owner.

When they arrived at the train’s final stop at Pearse Street station in the heart of the capital it became clear the dog had no owner on board.

Staff then tweeted that they had a found a lost dog and also posted a picture of Patch.

Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny said staff at Pearse Station had quickly become attached to Patch and were disappointed to see him go when Anglin came to collect him.

“It was good she showed up so quickly, because the staff in the office were getting quite attached to him,” he said.

Anglin thanked Irish Rail for posting Patch’s photo on Twitter and all the other retweeters that helped her find Patch so quickly.

Irish Rail and Anglin posted a series of photos documenting her Dublin reunion with Patch, their return train trip, and even their car journey home.

“Thanks to everyone involved in getting Patch back to us,” she tweeted.

Spice Girls unite to launch musical

THE Spice Girls gave fans what they want – what they really, really want – reuniting onstage to announce the details of a musical based on their songs.
Producers stress that the stage show Viva Forever isn’t a biography of the band, but there are plenty of real-life resonances for the 1990s Girl Power group in its tale of female empowerment and friendship tested by fame. The show opens in London in December.

“We’re going to be introducing a whole new generation to Girl Power,” said Victoria Posh Spice Beckham, who attended a media launch alongside Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm and Melanie Brown – also known as Baby, Ginger, Sporty and Scary Spice.

Viva Forever aims to tap the same vast female fan base as world-conquering ABBA musical Mamma Mia, which has been produced in 14 languages and spawned a hit film starring Meryl Streep. The Spice Girls show tells the story of four friends whose bond becomes strained when their band enters a TV talent show.

Scored to Spice Girls hits including Wannabe, Spice Up Your Life, Mama and the title track, it was written by comedian Jennifer Saunders – co-creator of celebrity-skewering sitcom Absolutely Fabulous - and produced by Judy Craymer, the woman behind Mamma Mia.

The band’s outsized personalities and Halliwell’s Union Jack dress made the Spice Girls icons of 1990s Cool Britannia, and they sold 75 million records around the world. Halliwell left the group acrimoniously in 1998 and the Spice Girls effectively split a decade ago. The five members have not appeared together since a 2007-2008 reunion tour

Massachusetts homeowner finds naked woman cooking in her kitchen

A US woman returned home from a night away to find a naked female intruder cooking breakfast in her kitchen, Massachusetts police said.

Katherine Ferguson, 22, allegedly broke into the Taunton, Massachusetts, property with 24-year-old Kyle Timmons, knowing that the home was empty for the night..Patrolman Jeffrey Arruda, who responded to the shocked homeowner’s emergency call around 10.30am local time on Thursday, described seeing a young man running from the building, with an older man “wielding a hammer in hot pursuit”.

Arruda drew his service revolver and ordered both to stop. The older man, who said he was a relative of the homeowner, complied, while Timmons ran away, only to be tracked down by officers shortly afterward.

Detective Michael Bonenfant arrived on the scene to find that Ferguson had donned a dress and was in possession of a ring and watch, all of which belonged to the homeowner.

She was charged with two counts of putting a person in fear while breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property over $250 and receiving stolen property.

Timmons was charged with two counts of putting a person in fear while breaking and entering in the daytime for a felony, malicious destruction of property over $250, resisting arrest and violation of a restraining order.

Both suspects were arraigned and due back in court for pretrial hearings July 20

Mom Who Beat Daughter for Kissing Needs Lesson on When Hitting Kids Is Actually Okay

beltSome punishments clearly cross the line. This is one of them.

A woman allegedly beat her 7-year-old daughter — leaving bruises and lacerations — for kissing a kindergarten classmate. A New Jersey judge ruled that she was not within her parental rights for a punishment that went well beyond a “customary spanking.”

In court documents, the mother defended the beating saying it was within her constitutional rights to use that type of punishment. And believe it or not, an earlier court decision agreed with her. The first judge to hear the case didn’t think the whupping was actually excessive. Huh? That is a serious head scratcher. But it’s easy to see why that decision was reversed.

Prosecutors said photos of the girl showed bruises on her arms, back, buttocks and thoughts. She also had cuts to her buttocks and right though likely caused by the belt buckle. If this mom reacts like this over a little kiss, I shudder to think of what would happen if the little girl were to cuss or hit. There must be some line when it comes to corporal punishment.

I know, I know. Just who is going to set the standard outlining when it’s okay to hit. Well, until the International Association of Spanking Parents comes out with an official rule book, parents will just have to use a bit of common sense. Kiss – a scolding, if even that. Stealing – a spanking, if that’s your preference. In any circumstance, a spanking that results is bruising and lacerations is over-the-top. Giving birth to children doesn’t give you the right to torture them.

Do you think this mom was within her rights?

Jerry Lewis hospital scare

Legendary comedian Jerry Lewis has spent a second night in the hospital after collapsing before he was due to hand Tom Cruise a prestigious Friars Club award.

The 86-year-old entertainer was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at his Manhattan hotel with low blood sugar before he was due to take the stage Tuesday night. He was scheduled to present Cruise with the Friars Entertainment Icon Award.

A Friars rep said last night, “I just received word that Jerry Lewis will spend a second night in the hospital. He is doing well and expected now to be released on Thursday [today].”

Yesterday, there was some confusion over Lewis’ condition. It was first said he was released late Tuesday, then on Wednesday.

Lewis’ friend and rep Candi Cazau told us: “He was kept overnight as a precaution. He gets wrapped up and engrossed in his work, and he forgets to eat. He is diabetic, and it’s important for him to keep those [blood sugar] levels up. He was feeling dizzy, and since he was not in Las Vegas where his doctors are, they did take him to the hospital as a precautionary measure. He is feeling great and is anxious to get back up and back to work.”

Sources told us that Cruise had personally asked for Lewis to present him his top honor — previously only bestowed by the Friars Club on Douglas Fairbanks, Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra.

Cruise told the crowd, “I am sorry Jerry couldn’t be here tonight, but I know he is going to be fine.” He added that he grew up watching Lewis’ work on TV: “As a young child and seeing what he did as an entertainer, that made a huge difference.” He also praised Lewis’ “staggering” work to raise billions to fight muscular dystrophy. Cruise continued, “I have great respect for Jerry, the world would definitely be a different place without him.”

Burger chain unleashes bacon sundae

BURGER King wants to lure American customers during the summer with a barbecue party – and a bacon sundae.
The world’s second biggest hamburger chain is launching several pork, beef and chicken sandwiches as limited time offers. And for a sweet ending, the company is also offering a bacon sundae – vanilla soft serve with fudge, caramel, bacon crumbles and a piece of bacon.

The salty-sweet dessert clocks in at 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar.

The limited-time items are Burger King’s the latest push to win back customers with a revived menu.

Earlier this year, Burger King launched its biggest-ever menu expansion including fruit smoothies, snack wraps and new salads.

The items were intended to go after a broader audience of mums and families, a shift from the chain’s previous strategy of courting young men with calorie bombs.

Core menu items, such as french fries and the Whopper, have also been tweaked as part of the company’s efforts to improve food quality.

Private equity owner 3G plans to take Burger King public on the New York Stock Exchange this month.

Sheen in obscene rant against security guard

FORMER Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen launched into an F-bomb-laced tirade yesterday after a security guard wouldn’t let him return to an ice hockey finals game in Los Angeles after he’d left.
Sheen went outside for a cigarette during Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals, apparently unaware of Staples Center rules against re-entry.The Anger Management actor first tried to reason and plead with a female guard, asking, “What does common sense direct?”

A moment later, he lost it.

“You know what? F***ing blow my balls! All right, you f***ing a***hole!” he said. His tirade was captured in a video posted on TMZ.

Sheen’s friends tried keeping him away from paparazzi, but the actor wanted to make a point.

Sheen, 46, composed himself and looked directly into a camera, asking, “Is common sense and common courtesy, like, gone in society? That was what I was trying to impress upon her.”

”Let a guy back in the door he just walked out of, I mean come on,” Sheen said. “Common sense, that’s all.”

The guard told cameras she gave Sheen a piece of her mind.

“Did you not hear me tell him to f*** off?” she said. “I don’t care who he is.”

LinkedIn investigating reports of password hack

LinkedIn investigates claims passwords stolen

Six million users of social network at risk

Security firm claims 6,458,020 passwords on net

THE online professional networking website LinkedIn was investigating reports that it was hacked today with more than six millions of its users’ passwords stolen.

A message on its Twitter account early today confirmed, “Our team is currently looking into reports of stolen passwords. Stay tuned for more.”

About two hours later, around 11am ET, LinkedIn posted a second message, stating that they were still investigating, “but at this time, we’re still unable to confirm that any security breach has occurred. Stay tuned here.”

The alert was initially raised by Norwegian IT publication Dagens.it which reported that a Russian hacker website posted some 6.5 million encrypted passwords on its forum thought to have come from LinkedIn.

The hackers apparently wanted get help cracking the encrypted passwords.

Although LinkedIn hasn’t yet confirmed a breach, Twitter lit up with posts from users who reported that they’d seen the list of stolen passwords.

Internet security firm Sophos later confirmed that a file containing 6,458,020 encrypted passwords was, in fact, posted on the internet.

“Although the data which has been released so far does not include associated email addresses, it is reasonable to assume that such information may be in the hands of the criminals,” Sophos said in a statement. “Investigations by Sophos researchers have confirmed that the file does contain, at least in part, LinkedIn passwords.”

Sophos recommended that all LinkedIn users change their passwords as a precaution.

Dog nurses endangered tiger cubs

TWO Siberian tiger cubs abandoned in Russia by their mother have found an unusual wet nurse – a wrinkled, sand-coloured Shar Pei dog named Cleopatra.

The cubs were born late May in a zoo at the Oktyabrsky health resort in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.

Zoo assistant director Viktoria Kudlayeva said the dog immediately gave the cubs all her attention.

“She accepted them right away,” Ms Kudlayeva said. “She’s cleaning them and breast feeding them as if they were her own. And they also sleep together.”

The cubs – named Clyopa, after their adopted mother, and Plyusha – are also being fed goat’s milk.

Ms Kudlayeva said that the cubs pose no danger to the dog even though they are already showing their claws and hissing.

“They aren’t aggressive and they depend on her for feeding,” she said.

Fewer than 400 Siberian tigers – also known as Ussuri, Amur or Manchurian tigers – have survived in the wild, most of them in Russia’s Far East

Two murder suspects use hacksaw to escape from Arkansas jail

TWO men charged with murder escaped from an Arkansas jail by using a hacksaw to cut through metal bars.

KSLA-TV reported Cortez Rashod Hooper, 23, and Quincy Vernard Stewart, 36, were last seen between 3:00am and 4:00am local time in their cell in the Miller County Jail in Texarkana, a town that rests on the border of Arkansas and Texas, according to the sheriff’s office. The men used a hacksaw blade to cut the metal bars out of a small window inside their cell, then broke the glass out of another window on the second floor and jumped to the ground, Miller County Sheriff’s officials said. The pair got away by climbing under a three-metre-high razor-wire fence. An active manhunt was underway and both men are from the area, KSLA reported.Hooper was jailed on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault, as well as probation violations. Stewart was being held on a capital murder charge from Bowie County and drug possession, the station said.

It was unclear how the men got a hacksaw into their cell.

Woman fired from lingerie shop was ‘too hot’

A BUXOM 29-year-old New Jersey woman claims managers at an intimate apparel shop in New York told her to tape down her breasts, then fired her because she was “too sexy” for the office.

“It was very shocking, very humiliating,” said Lauren Odes, who filed a complaint against Native Intimates to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
“It was a crazy experience, unlike anything I’ve ever been through.”
Ms Odes and her lawyer, Gloria Allred, said she spent one humiliating week at the Fifth Avenue garment business in April.
A temp agency placed Odes at Native Intimates, where she performed data entry and coordinate shipment of samples, according to Ms Allred.
“She was told by supervisors that ‘You are just too hot for this office. Maybe you should wear your boyfriend’s T-shirt and sweatpants’,” Ms Allred said.
“Ms Odes alleged that the supervisor suggested that Lauren try taping her breasts down to make them appear smaller.”
On her final day at work, Ms Odes wore a form-fitting black dress and was told she should either don an oversized bathrobe or go out and buy a whole new outfit.
She claimed she was fired over the phone while she was out getting her less-sexy clothing.
The Jersey woman claims she recorded a supervisor, minutes later, saying she had to “change my hair, change my lips, they’re too fresh”.
“Her supervisors warned that the company’s Orthodox Jewish owners saw what she was wearing and disapproved,” Ms Allred said

US kids behave better than Brits and Aussies on car trips, survey finds

“Are we there yet?”

It’s a question parents dread – but new research shows American adults are doing a little better than their contemporaries across the pond and Down Under.

Australian children have the world’s shortest fuses in cars, closely followed by British brats, according to a survey by Amsterdam-based GPS manufacturer TomTom.

Aussie children aged two to eight will last for just 23 minutes, on average, on a trip before they get bored and start to play up.

Children from the UK made it to 24 minutes, those from the US stretched their patience to half an hour and little ones from New Zealand lasted a relatively merciful 39 minutes before kicking up a stink.

So why do Aussie children become a challenge so quickly? TomTom Asia Pacific spokeswoman Valarie Cross told The (Sydney) Daily Telegraph it might have something to do with the geography Down Under.

”When you compare Australians to people in places like Europe they take a lot more holidays by car rather than by plane,” she said.

“There is that tradition of the family road trip and that means kids might be getting into the car more often and so will tend to get restless faster.”

A quarter of parents surveyed admitted they lied to their children about the expected time of arrival to make journeys seem shorter.

And more than 40 percent said being stuck in a car with the kids was more stressful than work. Even the dentist’s chair was a more calming place to be for more than a third of parents

Mickey Mouse gives gay marriage thumbs up in Japan

Mickey Mouse gay marriage

Higashi (left) and her partner Hiroko (right) showing their “Thank you” messages to Mickey Mouse at the Tokyo Disneyland in Urayasu.

JUST days after President Barack Obama came out in favour of gay marriage, another supporter of homosexual unions emerged in Japan: Mickey Mouse.

Despite their having no legal status, same sex couples are able to hold fairytale wedding ceremonies at hotels inside the popular Tokyo Disney Resort, including at the Cinderella Castle, a company spokeswoman said today.

News of the unions came to light when Koyuki Higashi, 27, inquired about marrying her female partner at the resort.

A member of staff who answered the call said there would be no problem with their marrying, provided they dressed “like a man and a woman”, Higashi wrote on her blog.

The staff member explained a same-sex wedding would create “repercussions” among visitors to the park if both brides were wearing wedding dresses or both grooms wore tuxedos, the blog added.

However, a few days later, the resort operator got back in touch to say their initial response had been wrong and gay couples were free to mix and match their attire.

“We have never refused an application for a same-sex wedding at hotels here,” a spokeswoman at Milial Resort Hotels, a subsidiary of Tokyo Disney Resort, told AFP today.

“One of our staff members was mistaken when explaining about outfits for a same-sex wedding,” she said.

But she added gay and lesbian couples were not allowed to exchange marriage vows at the onsite chapel “because of Christian teaching”.

Homosexuality in Japan is widely accepted but not openly discussed.

Last week Obama became the first sitting US president to openly back same-sex marriage, an issue that sharply divides America.

‘Dead’ man wakes at funeral

THE funeral of a 28-year-old waiter in southern Egypt turned into a celebration when he woke up after being declared dead.
Hospital officials had pronounced dead Hamdi Hafez al-Nubi, who came from the village of Naga al-Simman in the southern province of Luxor, after he suffered a heart attack while working.

His family says grieving relatives took him home and, according to Islamic tradition, washed his body and prepared him for burial on Friday evening.

A doctor sent to sign the death certificate found it strange that his body was warm. At closer observation she discovered he was still alive.

His mother fainted upon hearing the good news.

Book claims Bill Clinton told wife Hillary to take on ‘amateur’ Barack Obama

BILL Clinton thought so little of US President Barack Obama that he pressed his wife to quit her job as secretary of state and challenge him in the primaries, a new book claims.

“The country needs you!” the former president told Hillary Clinton, urging her to run this year, according to accounts of the conversation included in Edward Klein’s new biography of Mr Obama.

The title of Klein’s explosive, unauthorised bio, The Amateur, was taken directly from Bill Clinton’s bombshell criticism of the President, the author said.

“Barack Obama,” Bill Clinton said, according to book excerpts, “is an amateur.”

The withering criticism is incredible, given the fact that Bill Clinton is actively campaigning for Mr Obama’s re-election.

But according to the book, he unloaded on Mr Obama and pressed his wife to run against her boss during a gathering in the ex-president’s home office in Chappaqua, New York, last August that included longtime friends, Klein said.

…”The economy’s a mess, it’s dead flat. America has lost its Triple-A rating … You know better than Obama does,” Bill Clinton reportedly said, adding that Mr Obama “doesn’t know how to be president” and is “incompetent”.

“Why risk everything now?” a skeptical Hillary Clinton was said to have told her husband, emphasising that she wanted to leave a legacy as secretary of state.

“I want my term (at the State Department) to be an important one, and running away from it now would leave it as a footnote.”

The book’s explosive claims were shot down late Thursday by spokesmen for the White House and the Clintons, who closed ranks.

Bill Clinton’s spokesman Matt McKenna said the excerpts were “totally and completely false” and called Klein “a known liar”.

Philippe Reines, a spokesman for the secretary of state, noted that Hillary Clinton challenged the veracity of an earlier book Klein wrote about her, The Truth About Hillary.

White House spokesman Eric Schultz accused Klein of making up facts to sell books.

Klein, a former editor of The New York Times Magazine and Newsweek, defended both books, saying they are factually sound

Lady Gaga Tea Cup fetches $74,225 in Japan

FANS of Lady Gaga bidding on a teacup and saucer used only once by the pop diva have offered more than six million yen ($74,225) for the item by the time the hammer fell, a Japanese auction site says.

With more than 1300 bids, the week-long auction finished yesterday, with a top offer of Y6,011,000, according to Yahoo! Japan, which managed the charity event.

The cup was used by Gaga at a press conference in Tokyo three months after the massive tsunami of March last year swamped a large stretch of coastline.

Gaga said at the time that she would auction the cup, marked with her lipstick and bearing the Japanese message “We pray for Japan” along with the star’s autograph.

All the money raised will be used to help young Japanese artists who want to study in the United States.

The teacup was one of a number of items being sold to raise money for those affected by Japan’s worst post-war calamity, and was the second most expensive lot.

The top-priced item was a Kawai crystal piano used by Yoshiki of rock band Japan X, which went for Y11,001,000, Yahoo! Japan said today.

The natural disaster killed some 19,000 people on Japan’s northeast coast and sparked the world’s worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, leading to a plunge in visitors to the country.

Gaga visited Japan twice after the disaster and called on tourists from around the world to follow suit.

The songstress is due back in Japan this week as part of an Asian tour.

USA – Human genes engineered into experimental GMO rice which could create more disease!

Source: NaturalNews

Unless the rice you buy is certified organic, or comes specifically from a farm that tests its rice crops for genetically modified (GM) traits, you could be eating rice tainted with actual human genes. The only known GMO with inbred human traits in cultivation today, a GM rice product made by biotechnology company Ventria Bioscience is currently being grown on 3,200 acres in Junction City, Kansas — and possibly elsewhere — and most people have no idea about it.

Since about 2006, Ventria has been quietly cultivating rice that has been genetically modified (GM) with genes from the human liver for the purpose of taking the artificial proteins produced by this “Frankenrice” and using them in pharmaceuticals. With approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Ventria has taken one of the most widely cultivated grain crops in the world today, and essentially turned it into a catalyst for producing new drugs.

Originally, the cultivation of this GM rice, which comes in three approved varieties (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/brs/biotech_ea_permits.html), was limited to the laboratory setting. But in 2007, Ventria decided to bring the rice outdoors. The company initially tried to plant the crops in Missouri, but met resistance from Anheuser-Busch and others, which threatened to boycott all rice from the state in the event that Ventria began planting its rice within state borders (http://todayyesterdayandtomorrow.wordpress.com).

So Ventria‘s GM rice eventually ended up in Kansas, where it is presumably still being grown for the purpose of manufacturing drugs on 3,200 acres in Junction City. And while this GM rice with added human traits has never been approved for human consumption, it is now being cultivated in open fields where the potential for unrestrained contamination and spread of its unwanted, dangerous GM traits is virtually a given.

“This is not a product that everyone would want to consume,” said Jane Rissler from the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) to the Washington Post back in 2007. “It is unwise to produce drugs in plants outdoors.”

Though receiving tens of thousands of public comments of opposition, many rightly concerned about the spread of GM traits, the USDA approved open cultivation of Ventria‘s GM rice anyway. This, of course, occurred after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had refused approval for Ventria‘s GM rice back in 2003 (http://www.kansasruralcenter.org/publications/PharmaRice.pdf).

GM ‘pharmaceutical’ rice could cause more disease, suggests report

Besides the threat of contamination and wild spread, Ventria‘s GM rice, which is purportedly being grown to help third-world children overcome chronic diarrhea, may conversely cause other chronic diseases.
“These genetically engineered drugs could exacerbate certain infections, or cause dangerous allergic or immune system reactions,” said Bill Freese, Science Policy Analyst at the Center for Food Safety (CFS), who published a report back in 2007 about the dangers of Ventria‘s GM rice.

US pastor Terry Jones burns Koran again

CONTROVERSIAL US pastor Terry Jones has burned more copies of the Koran and a depiction of the prophet Mohammed to protest the imprisonment in Iran of a Christian clergyman, The Gainesville Sun reported.
The newspaper said Jones and another pastor, who carried out their protest in front of their church in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday, demanded the release of Christian pastor Youcef Nadarkhani from an Iranian prison.
Jones said Nadarkhani faces execution.

According to the report, the Pentagon urged Jones to reconsider, expressing concern that American soldiers in Afghanistan and elsewhere could be put at greater risk because of the act.

In March 2011, Jones’ assistant, pastor Wayne Sapp, burned a copy of the Koran and broadcast the ceremony on the internet.

The images incited violence in northern Afghanistan, in which at least 12 people were killed.

Later, a man wearing an Afghan border police uniform shot dead two US military personnel.

About 20 people attended Saturday’s burning, the paper said. Several Gainesville police officers were stationed across the street from the church.

Moments after the ceremony, the Gainesville fire department issued the church a citation for violating the city’s fire ordinances, the paper noted

Free apps could be draining your smart phone battery – study

If you’ve wondered why your smart phone’s battery life seems short, free apps and the advertisements that come with them may be responsible.

A study by researchers at Indiana’s Purdue University found running one app can drain a battery in 90 minutes.

Using energy profiling software called Eprof, the researchers discovered 65-75 per cent of the energy used by apps downloaded for free was used by third-party advertises, whose adverts pay for the product.

The study looked at the energy usage popular free smart phone apps, such as the Angry Birds, NYTimes and CNN apps, on Android and Windows Mobile operating systems, and found only 10-30 per cent of the energy was used powering the apps’ core functions.

Angry Birds, for example, used only 20 per cent of the energy to run the game, while 45 per cent of the power was used assessing the user’s GPS and downloading location-specific advertisement through 3G

Why Does My Cat… Cry at Night?

  • Cat sitting on bed at night while owner sleeps.

If your cat cries at night, you’re not alone. Cats get noisy for different reasons at different stages in their lives.

Kittens often like to play at night. Though adopting two kittens together is an excellent idea (and recommended for health and general welfare), their wee-hour play-fights can keep you from a good night’s rest.

As your cat matures, he might want to hunt. Some cats get especially vocal when they’re on the prowl. Often cats feel the urge to hunt in the evening, and a midnight hunt of an insect, reptile, or rodent (depending on your geographic location) can mean a rude awakening for you when your cat screams out in frustration or elation.

With an older cat, vocalization throughout the night can be a sign of a serious problem. Advancing age sometimes brings sleep-wake cycle aberrations and dementia. These conditions are common in geriatric cats and may be related to anxiety or plain old disorientation. If you have a senior cat who gets very vocal at night, tell your veterinarian. There are therapies that can improve the quality of life of afflicted cats — and their humans

Monsanto ‘Roundup’ Herbicide Linked To Parkinson’s-Related Brain Damage – Don’t Buy It!

Source: Activist Post

Alarming new research published in the journal Neurotoxicology and Teratology supports the emerging connection between glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide, and neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Parkinsonian disorders.

Published this month (April, 2012), the new study entitled “Glyphosate induced cell death through apoptotic and authophagic mechanisms,” investigated the potential brain-damaging effects of herbicides, which the authors stated “have been recognized as the main environmental factor associated with neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease.”

They found that glyphosate inhibited the viability of differentiated test cells (PC12, adrenal medula derived), in both dose-and-time dependent manners. The researchers also found that “glyphosate induced cell death via authophagy pathways in addition to activating apoptotic pathways.”

Roundup herbicide is now a ubiquitous contaminant in our air, rain, groundwater, and food, making complete avoidance near impossible. A growing body of experimental evidence now indicates that it in addition to its neurotoxicity it also has the following.
Modes of Toxicity

  • Carcinogen
  • Endocrine Disruptor
  • Genotoxic
  • Biocide
  • Cytotoxic
  • Bioaccumulator
  • Hepatotoxic
  • Teratrogenic
  • Clastogenic
  • Oxidant
  • Aquacidal
  • Mutagenic
  • Aromatase Disruptor
  • Glutathione Down-regulator
  • Malondialdehyde Up-regulator
  • Necrotic
  • Nephrotoxic

Once marketed as “safe as table salt” by Monsanto, the original patent holder and manufacturer of this glyphosate-based herbicide, evidence now indicates it is toxic to human DNA at concentrations diluted 450-fold lower than used in agricultural applications.

This study only adds to human case reports of glyphosate-poisoning and/or occupational exposure where neurological damage was a direct consequence. A 2011 case study published in the journal Parkinsonism Related Disorders, entitled “Parkinsonism after chronic occupational exposure to glyphosate,” reported the following incident:

Here we report a patient with parkinsonism following chronic occupational exposure to glyphosate. A previously healthy 44- year-old woman presented with rigidity, slowness and resting tremor in all four limbs with no impairment of short-term memory, after sustaining long term chemical exposure to glyphosate for 3 years as a worker in a chemical factory. The chemical plant produced a range of herbicides including: glyphosate, gibberellins, and dimethyl hydrogen phosphite; however, the patient worked exclusively in the glyphosate production division. She only wore basic protection such as gloves or a face mask for 50 h each week in the plant where glyphosate vapor was generated. She frequently felt weak. Two months before she came to our clinic, she had expe- rienced severe dizziness and blurred vision.

Another case study published in 2003 reported a case of parkinsonism subsequent to glyphosate exposure.

These case studies are also backed up by animal research. In the roundworm model of glyphosate exposure the chemical results in neurodegeneration directly associated with damage to the dopamine and GABA producing neurons. In the rat model, glyphosate exposure results in oxidative brain damage, particularly the substantia nigra, where the highest concentration of dopamine-producing cells reside, and which is the primary locus of neurological damage in Parkinson’s disease.

The Genetically Modified Food You Eat Every Day – Warning, this may shock you!

Source: Fast coexist

Genetically modified food is in a store near you today. In fact, it’s been there for years. You may not know it, but in all the fracas over genetically modified food, one point is often left out: You’ve been eating it for a long time and no one has told you. This infographic from Nature’s Pathwhich makes organic cereals, bars, and waffles that contain no GMO ingredients, they’d like you to know–shows where you’re getting your genetically modified treats, and why no one has told you:
Many crops are genetically modified so frequently, it’s nearly impossible to find non-GMO versions. These modifications usually involve either a seed manufacturer making their seeds genetically resistant to a certain type of weed-killer (that the seed company also conveniently sells–synergy!) or to make plants resistant to certain pests naturally.

You may not know that you’re eating these crops–despite the fact that they appear in 80% of all packaged food sold in the country–because the U.S. is one of the few places in the developed world that doesn’t require food producers to disclose whether or not their ingredients have any modifications.

If something is labeled “organic” by the USDA, that means it has no GMO crops. The Non-GMO Project is also working on a system for labeling products that aren’t genetically enhanced. To be fair, there isn’t any science that proves that GMO crops are at all bad for consumption; there also aren’t any that confirm that they’re safe. For now, we’re in the dark. And more and more GMO products–like Monsanto’s sneaky, unlabeled sweet corn, the first direct-to-consumer GMO food–are coming to market every day. The full infographic is here:
